Project manager: Mgr. Ondřej Kučera

This project focuses on developing interdisciplinary research into the field of Chinese studies through the collaboration of colleagues from the Department of Asian Studies, Department of Politics and Department of Applied Economics at the PhF UP.  The multidisciplinary nature of the research team is highlighted by its members having either completed, or in the case of doctoral students currently in the process of completing, study and research in their respective fields, which include: sinology, Chinese philology, Asian and African languages, religious studies, history, philosophy, politics, economics, ethnology, geography and cartography.  The scope and breadth of knowledge bestows upon the team the methodological oversight necessary to achieve the common objective which is to research China, its language, its culture and other specifics.

The project’s goal is to enhance the knowledge and skills of the current and future academic staff (and students) in contemporary research within the field of Chinese studies.  The research is organized into five key areas of interest:

  1. History
  2. Literature
  3. Linguistics
  4. Cultural anthropology
  5. Modern China

Each key area of interest is focused in a particular research direction within the framework of the field of study, so as to keep pace with and reflect the current global research trends in Chinese studies.  This enables comprehensive academic developments in the respective study fields within the framework of Czech Republic and its position in the European context.  The growth and development of the team will be achieved via thorough networking and the strengthening of international connections through short and medium-term overseas study visits, and also by the organization of conferences, workshops and seminars encouraging international participation.  These methods are expected to establish personal and thematic connections with global and contemporary sinological trends.
